Tylose Glue might be well-known in the underground world of gingerbread fanatics, but I’d never heard of it until I started competing in the National Gingerbread House Competition in 2018. Up until that point, I’d only ever been using royal icing as an edible glue.
So what exactly is Tylose glue? Well, the answer is simple. It’s Tylose powder and water. Yup, that easy.
You can find Tylose powder on Amazon or at any major craft store that sells cake supplies. You can also purchase CMC powder. It’s essentially the same thing.
Tylose “Glue” Ingredients:
1 (Heaping) Tablespoon Tylose Powder (or CMC Powder)
2 Cups Water
Instructions:
- Heat 2 cups of water on the stove or in the microwave until boiling. Remove from heat.
- Add 1 heaping tablespoon of Tylose (or CMC) powder and mix. Break up the solid parts as best as possible.
- Refrigerate several hours (I like to do overnight).
- Mix until completely combined and store in airtight container for up to several weeks.
You can make the glue thicker by using more powder or less water. I use this product for all my edible creations. It dries fairly quickly (a few minutes) and is thin, clear, and edible. It’s strong enough to hold small pieces together, but I wouldn’t count on it for anything heavy duty. It probably isn’t the best option for gluing your gingerbread house walls, but it’s perfect for securing those small decorations to them.
