Black Friday is here and I’ve been scouring the internet in search of things to buy that will help me up my gingerbread game!
And now I want to share my findings with you!
Let me start by saying that I am an Amazon Affiliate. If you use any of these links to go to Amazon and make a purchase, regardless of what that purchase might be, I get paid a very small commission. It costs nothing to you. So please, by all means, use these links for all your holiday shopping! Your purchases help me afford my gingerbread obsession and allow me to create more content for you, and for that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Included in this list are some of the items I enjoy using most in my gingerbread journey. Others are items that were suggested to me by the gingerbread community that I’m a part of. I also threw in a few things that were “suggested” by Amazon based on all the other items I was researching.
I tried to include descriptions of each thing, since we all get very creative in the ways we use our tools.
Side Note: A few people have said the images are not working on their mobile devices, so I added products links as well.
Tools and Kitchen Items
The thermometer I use at home for cooking isomalt and sugar is actually not a candy thermometer at all. It’s a meat thermometer. I like it because it’s metal, thin, long, and very easy to clean, even when I accidentally leave it out and the isomalt dries and cements itself to the end of it.
This blow torch is great for eliminating bubbles in your isomalt and sugar elements. It’s also great for heating parts of the isomalt that need to be shaped or fixed.
These paint brushes are in my cart right now. I bought some small paint brushes from Michaels this season but they started to separate pretty quickly, so I’m looking forward to having something with better quality.
This magnifying light was a suggestion from a gingerfriend and I think I’m about to add this one to my cart as well. It will pair well with the teeny tiny paint brushes so I can paint the most intricate details on my gingerbread creations.
I had a clay extruder that I use, but I’m not a huge fan of it. This particular one was also suggested by a gingerfriend (thanks Chloe). It’s supposed to be easier to use and not as rough on the hands.
I have tons of mats that I like to use. Some of them are silicone mats used for baking. Some are cutting mats used for cutting. Some I use for painting and crafting. I just love having a variety of mats for all occasions!
My approach to gingerbread is very interesting. I am a DIYer at heart and I love working with wood and crafts, so I’ve always tried to apply my knowledge of those things to my gingerbread construction. That being said, I spend a lot of time in the garage using my tools to manipulate the gingerbread. My favorite tool is my Dremel.
A member of the gingerbread community also sent me a link to a site that’s selling a scroll saw with a big Black Friday deal today, so you can check that one out here.
I often use my dehydrator to try and pull the moisture out of small items and make them dry faster. This was super helpful when I was on the Haunted Gingerbread Showdown on the Food Network. Working on a timeline is stressful and anything that helps speed up the process is key.
My mini crock pot is CLUTCH! I use it for isomalt, sugar, gelatin, modeling chocolate, dipping chocolate, gummy bears. You name it. Being able to plug it in and leave it on is super helpful.
Everyone who wants to work with gingerbread needs a good rolling pin. And everyone who does work with gingerbread has an opinion on which one is the best. I prefer the large white Wilton rolling pins, but I know others can’t stand those. I found a few. Try them out and let me know what your favorite is!
These silicone pinch bowls are great for melting and pouring isomalt and sugar. I also use them for mixing paints and organizing different materials. They’re easy to clean as well.
I’m not sure if Black Friday deals are going to extend to any food items, but I made a list of them anyway. Starting with gelatin sheets. You can use these to bloom gelatin for different uses or you can just use the sheets as window panes in your houses.
Isomalt comes in two different forms. You can buy the crystals that need to be cooked down before using, or you can purchase pre-cooked isomalt that can just be microwaved for easy use.
Wafer paper is a great product to use in gingerbread creations. This year I used it for all the fine hair details on my gingerbread nutcrackers. I also used my edible printer to print some cute little details on wafer paper.
PME Spray is a very popular product in the gingerbread world. It’s especially helpful for spraying isomalt and sugar windows after they’ve been poured and set.
Any time I’m making something that needs a lot of support, or is really tall, I use cinnamon sticks. These particular ones are longer than your normal cinnamon sticks. I had a gingerfriend use them in her gravity defying National Gingerbread House Competition entry this season.
As someone who likes to compete in gingerbread competitions, I have A LOT of products that I need to keep organized. In fact, I have a whole cabinet dedicated to my gingerbread tools and ingredients.
Last year I purchased a bunch of products to help me organize that cabinet, and I wanted to share those with you.
First, my stackable storage containers. These are great because they hold so many different items and they stack on top of each other to save space. I own 3 sets of them.
Lastly, I have a few of these drawers in my cart right now. I think they’ll be super useful for items I’m creating this season. I’m all about the organization of everything I do now. Having a clean workspace and knowing where everything is at all times was a game changer.
I have hundreds of cookie cutters. It’s kind of sad actually. Considering I never actually use them to make cookies. I use them to cut out shapes in gingerbread before I bake it. Or, to cut out shapes in ginger clay. You never know when a cookie cutter is going to come in handy. Especially, the circles. I have those is every size imaginable.
My gingerbread obsession actually extends to my children as well. I want to pass on the love of this hobby and books is a great way to do that!
The first book on the list is actually written and illustrated by a member of the “Gingerbread Tips & Tricks” group (Lindsay Deibler) and her mom! It’s a lovely story.
Last but not least, we have a woman in the “Gingerbread Tips & Tricks” group on Facebook who has created her own product, the Zeoto Pen. It’s a heat decorating pen and you can check it out right here!
Thanks for reading! I hope you were able to find a good deal for Black Friday.
If you have other great deals to share, or just some fun gingerbread items you want people to know about, comment and share! Or DM me on Facebook and I will add it to the post.
